Intermission of Long Term Assignments

Well I am in the subbing game again. Last week I subbed for 3 days. This week is going to end up being 2.5 days. Eh... I do what I can. I can't be cooped up for too long without getting antsy, so I registered for ESL Supplemental test. Hopefully that will give me even more of an edge when applying for jobs. (Fingers crossed I pass it). I have downloaded a study guide and hope that is good enough. I can't afford anything right now!

Today I had the opportunity to substitute in the classroom I will be long term subbing in starting next month! 5th grade is different for sure. There is definitely some attitude, and the kids are taller than me! Also, I have to learn 100 names! I have 4 classes ranging in sizes of 23-27! I only get 75 minutes with each group of kids, so by the time I've learned maybe 6 or 7 names, a new bunch comes in. Also, this school is very very very diverse. You walk into the cafeteria and everyone is eating something different. It also makes it 1,000x harder for learning names! I have to learn how to say about 60% of the kids' names. When I take roll, I get corrected by 13 kids! It will for sure be an intense learning expereince.

It was nice getting my feet wet with the kids today by myself. I of course will be going in once or twice a week to observe (without pay) but at least I got to see how they are with just me. Already I am stressed about wanting things my way, but the kids have been accustomed to different ways for an entire year!

For example, when I give directions for kids to stop working, clean up, and line up, I mean RIGHT NOW. These kids take a million years to get out of the classroom. When you are rotating 4 times throughout the day, that eats up a lot of time. And not only do I have to train 1 class to come in and sit quietly, I have to train 4! If the other teachers let them take their sweet time, who knows if anything I try will even work.

The school is great and the team seems awesome. I am just resistant to change. Ashley is such an awesome school, and it will be sad not to be there for 8 weeks :(
