Icepocalypse Marathon

I was in a sad state when I wrote my last blog because the Dallas Half-Marathon I had been training for was cancelled due to the ice that had invaded DFW.

Well on Saturday morning, I got a call from Rachel, my running buddy, and she told me to google, "2013 Icepocalypse Marathon" I saw that it was a group of people that still wanted to run the marathon even though it had been cancelled. I had spent the rest of Friday accepting the fact that I wasn't going to be running this weekend, so my first thought was, "omg she is insane.. this sounds likes a recipe for disaster." Rachel is a persistent one, and she proceeded to come pick me up and take me downtown for us to check out the road conditions (we all know I was not about to drive in that mess).

It seemed totally doable, but I was still hesitant. We were obviously doing it though, because Rachel had made up her mind. She waited for me to pack my bag at my place for us to go spend the night at her house. We carb-o-loaded, watched movies, and went to bed early considering they wanted to start at the same time the marathon would have started.

We woke up Sunday morning and I was still in disbelief that we were actually going to do this. got dressed, and got to downtown faster than we ever have since NO ONE was out on the roads.

When we got there, the guy that had arranged it had us all sign waivers since we were doing this at our own risk. There were 20-30 people that had connected through facebook and were crazy enough to go through. There were guys from Arkansas, someone from Detroit, and a girl from Omaha. Some were doing the half, and some were doing the full. The camaraderie that formed was awesome to see. We were all in this together!  Channel 8 news, Channel 11, Telemundo TV, and Dallas Morning News were all there getting some footage for later.

The running part really wasn't bad at all! We had trained accordingly, and although I didn't have all the people cheering and the atmosphere of a run, there was still a motivation that I would not have had in training. I finished it without slipping and busting it in the streets of Dallas!

I was on the news when everyone was watching TV to see if school would be canceled! That's an awesome time to be on local news! I looked up the other news sources as well and they had mostly covered the marathoners since they rocked it out!

The support and attention we got for doing this is INSANE! I had a lady reach out to me on facebook and is doing an article on Rachel and I in the Frisco Enterprise! And then we hear that someone is donating icepocalypse marathon medals for us! How neat!

I am so glad Rachel dragged me out there to accomplish the goal we set back in September! You better believe we will be going back again next year to claim TWO medals! Who knows... maybe we will even be crazy enough to train for 26.2 miles.... if I can convince Rachel to do it. haha
