Something that makes ME (a 22 year old) feel old is that none of my fourth graders were ALIVE when September 11th, 2001 happened. I decided to re-cap my memory of that day, 10 years later in my blog.
I was 12 years old and in 7th grade. My first class that day was Texas History with Coach Jones. It was in a portable building at Aledo Middle School.. now McAnally Intermediate. I don't remember who, but someone came into our room and told Coach Jones what happened. He told us and I remember thinking, "What's the World Trade Center?"
School was very off that day. Parents were coming to school and pulling their kids out. I believe after the second tower was hit, most of the students were guided to the Band Hall. It was the only room in the building that a tv antenna could pick up a news channel. So we were all squished in the band hall, watching the news on a tiny, fuzzy screen.
When they showed the plane actually going into the building. I remember a group of boys going, "WHOAAA COOOLL" The teachers in the room immediately scolded them... It was difficult for a bunch of middle schoolers to understand the severity of the situation.
Since I was in Middle School, I got home later than my brother and sister who were still in Elementary school. I walked in my front door and I didn't know if my Mom knew what had happened or not, so wanted to share with her. "Mom, someone drove a plane into the WTC." She frantically ran to hug me as I came home from school telling me the news at the same time I was telling her.
I remember watching with my mom and finding out about the Pentagon, Pennsylvania, etc. that night on the news.
So... Those are the moments from that day, 10 years ago that stick out in my memory.
